Common Name: Little Brown Bat
Scientific Name: Myotis lucifugus
Ohio Status: Species of Concern
Weight: 5-9g (0.2-0.5 oz)
Wing Span: 8.5-10.5"
Food: Insectivore: midges, mosquitoes, moths, beetles, mayflies, and caddisflies.
Habitat: Forested areas in much of United States and Canada including Alaska.
Mating: Breed in fall and through delayed fertilization, the female gives birth to one/two pups in late May to early July.
Young: They usually give birth to a single pup but can have two depending on factors such as adequate food supply,
Life span: About 20 years.
Facts: At one time it was believed to be Ohio’s most abundant bat but numbers have declined due to habitat loss and white nose syndrome (fungal disease affecting bats throughout North America). It is estimated the little brown bat can catch one insect every seven seconds.
